The mausoleum of Galla Placidia

Atlas of Beauty /
Story, Trails
Empress and great patroness, Galla Placidia, daughter of Emperor Theodosius, had many of the most beautiful churches still standing in Ravenna. Her mausoleum is one of the oldest buildings in the city and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. On the outside it is a sober red-brick building: it has a Latin cross plan with a dome concealed by a square turret-shaped tiburium. The interior has a magical atmosphere with mosaics sculpting the vault and golden light entering through alabaster windows. The dome has an immense starry sky with a Latin cross. In the lunettes to the east and west, deer drink from the fountain in a paradisiacal garden. It was to serve as the empress's last resting place, but Galla Placidia died and was buried in Rome. The mausoleum still moves the world, as does the whole city of Ravenna. Inside, darkness and the wonderful images that the artists of the time used to counteract the anxiety of the end, coexist.
