The pandemic's memorial
On the outskirts of Bergamo one can find woods with white birch trees, a Himalayan species, one for every person who died in the sad days of the pandemic. In the centre of this wood, thanks to a donation from the Sacchetti Foundation, which has already done much for Italy's artistic heritage, is a large marble work by Giuseppe Penone: an artist who is very familiar with nature. A block of Carrara marble, almost three metres high, carved following the veins of the stone, symbol of an uninterrupted memory. The work is called "Indistinct Boundaries"; in the dazzling white of the marble, the veins look like tendrils that bind the present to lives that are no more. An ideal synthesis of commemoration and rebirth.
