The seated boxer: Palazzo Massimo
Discovered in 1855 during excavations on a slope of the Quirinal, the boxer was born around the 4th century BC and is an original Greek bronze. The depicted athlete is seated, his elbows resting on his thighs, his boxing gloves still protecting his hands, his ears swollen, his nose deformed by fighting, and has long been an object of admiration as indicated by the surfaces worn by fans' caresses.
Carefully hidden in a mound of earth six metres underground, the boxer probably belonged to the remains of the Baths of Constantine. Today it is on display at the national museum of Palazzo Massimo in Rome.
