The Vittoria Alata
The Winged Victory was made around the middle of the 1st century AD, probably in one of the many bronze workshops in the Brescia area. With her feathery, fluffy wings, her hair styled in a sort of chignon, held back by a band illuminated by silver ageminae, she is our Nike, the young woman symbolising the sweet sound of victory. Discovered in 1926 in a cavity in the wall of the Capitoline temple where it remained hidden for 1400 years, it is the symbol of the Lombard city. After careful restoration in Florence at the Istituto delle pietre dure (Institute of semi-precious stones), it has returned to shine, as of 2020, in the city's Capitolium in a new display curated by Juan Navarro Baldeweg.
