Veiled Christ
The Veiled Christ is a marble sculpture by Giuseppe Sanmartino, preserved in the Sansevero Chapel in Naples. It is a masterpiece of virtuosity, one of the most famous and impressive sculptures in the world. The transparency of the veil draping the body seems to be the result of a mysterious prodigy.
Even today, as the story goes, the sculpture is the result of an alchemic construction, a petrifying device on a real body, given the esoteric fame of its patron: Prince Raimondo di Sangro. But scientific analysis and archive documents speak for themselves and attribute the work to the genius hand of the young Giuseppe Sanmartino who produced this masterpiece and had Andrea Mantegna's Christ preserved in the Brera Museum in Milan as a pictorial reference.
