Villa Barbaro and the Veronese frescoes

Classicism revisited. Halfway up the Asolo hills lies a masterpiece villa by Andrea Palladio. It is one of the few that still preserves its agricultural context, next to it it has a winery, but inside it holds another masterpiece: an extraordinary pictorial cycle. Commissioned by Daniele Barbaro, humanist and translator of Vitruvo's De Architectura, the villa contains one of the 16th century's pictorial masterpieces, a cycle of frescoes by Veronese dedicated to figures, landscapes and ancient ruins. The purpose of which - perhaps - is to illustrate the artist's journey to Rome in the retinue of Cardinal Grimani. The imposing painted structures dialogue perfectly with Palladio's architecture, in a succession of columns, arches and balconies. The most beautiful of which is the room of Olympus. The room to the right of the cross is dedicated to Bacchus revealing to men the mystery of wine. It was one of the first villas to open to the public. Visit the site
