Museo Classis
Museo Classis is located in the former sugar factory in Classe, Ravenna, and is dedicated to the history of the city in all its phases. Ravenna is a city to look at carefully not only as Vasily Kandinsky says "for the most beautiful and formidable mosaics ever seen", but because according to James Hillman, who visited it shortly before his death, it has a very high symbolic value. It is a city where beauty springs from the end, stands on the edge of the precipice. It is precisely in Ravenna that human beings have learnt to use beauty to counter the anxiety of the end.
Two new sections have recently been added to the museum: 'Praying', in which the beautiful cross-shaped mosaics from the Basilica of San Severo in Classe have been transported and reassembled, and 'Dwelling', in which the daily life of the city in the period from the 1st to the 4th century AD is recounted. The new acquisitions make the museum a vital place where research, restoration and education give rise to new insights and new research strands. From the museum you can easily reach the other stations in the archaeological park: the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare and the archaeological site of the ancient port."
