San Giorgio Morgeto

Upon arriving in San Giorgio Morgeto, on the slopes of Aspromonte, the village appears to be arranged in terraces along the hillside, with the ruins of the castle dominating the summit. Its origins are rooted in the ancient history of Calabria, and the town center still retains its medieval layout, characterized by narrow alleys, stairways, and houses built close together. It is a town to be explored slowly, letting yourself be guided by the winding streets and the traces of different eras that emerge at every turn.

The Angevin-Norman Castle, built between the 9th and 10th centuries, overlooks the village from above and offers a view of the Gioia Tauro Plain. A little further down, the ancient Dominican convent tells another chapter in the village’s cultural history: here, in the 16th century, Tommaso Campanella—the philosopher of  The City of the Sun—studied and took his vows. The complex still preserves its cloister and the memory of a place that for centuries was a center of learning and religious life.

But San Giorgio Morgeto is not just a village to be admired: it is a community where memory continues to take shape through traditions. Among these, the animated artistic nativity scene stands out, in which ancient crafts and scenes of peasant life are brought to life through moving figures, along with religious festivals and the Medieval Festival, which each year bring costumes, music, and tales of the past back to the streets. A heritage made up of places and traditions that still helps define the town’s identity today.
